I did a style tribute to my mom Monday, so it is only fitting I do a style tribute to my sweet papi-pop, aka my Jamaican daddy.

Today is Jamaican Independence day !!!Big ups to the homeland of mi fadda! (to those who don't understand Patois , that's my dad!) In honor of my paternal heritage , I'm going full on Island gyal today!! My dad is more on the religious side so I didn't grow up listening to Reggae , Dancehall, and drinking Rum (its a joke btw...these are just stereotypes).I grew up in church living a very sheltered life. I never knew much of my Jamaican heritage or family until we visited Jamaica the summer before I went to 11th grade. I didn't know what to expect, but I was excited. The resorts and coconut sipping images drenched in your mind can be thrown out right now. I experienced the real Jamaica , the rural , the local Jamaica. It was enchanting! Me and my brothers walked country dirt roads , the perfume of ripened Mangoes filled the air from local Mango trees hanging over the streets. The first day we got there and were just chilling in my dad's old country neighborhood, a guy stopped me and my brother and said "Are you Brackett's?!" (that's my dad's last name-my maiden name) we had just stumbled upon on of my dad's brothers. He knew we were related because of our big eyes , he said. For two weeks we travelled all over from Negril, Sav-la Mar, Montego Bay, Kingston and a few other places visiting family I had never seen as well as my full of church (we never got a vacation from that.lol).To sum up that trip, I learned firsthand about my Jamaican culture and learn to embrace the simplicities of life. That trip really changed me. I came home culturally awakened and filled with so much pride. Seeing my island brethren take nothing and make it into something in so many facets of life really got me inspired. So today, I pay homage to the colorful , creative, strong willed dutty whining culture of my Jamaican people.Side note: I will be going to crop over and I will be fully decked out with my glorious cheeks clapping on somebody's float one day!
